The show is very loosely based on the historical figure Spartacus and the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic from 73-71 BC. However, most of the characters and the specific plots are works of historical fiction, created for dramatic effect.

The second season, Spartacus: Vengeance, premiered in 2012 and consists of 10 episodes. The story revolves around Spartacus (now played by Liam McIntyre) and his quest for revenge against his former owner, Varro (played by Craig Horner). The season explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the complexities of Spartacus's character as he navigates the treacherous world of ancient Rome.
