To understand the phenomenon, one must first understand the cinematic landscape of India prior to and during 2018. For decades, the "Three Idiots" paradigm dominated: Bollywood was the singular cultural force, and regional cinema (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada) was viewed as niche in the North. While Bollywood produced polished romantic dramas and urban comedies, a massive demographic in the Hindi-speaking belt—specifically the tier-2 and tier-3 cities, and the working class in tier-1 cities—felt alienated. They craved high-octane action, mythological grandeur, and emotional melodrama that modern Bollywood was slowly abandoning in favor of "multiplex" films.
