For most users, the goal is to save space while keeping the game 100% intact. Several tools and formats are currently favored:

Standard PS2 ROMs (ISOs) contain "dummy data"—essentially filler files used to fill up the physical space on a DVD. Highly compressed versions use advanced archiving tools like , RAR , or ZSO formats to strip away this unnecessary data or compress it significantly.

You cannot run a .7z or .rar file directly inside an emulator. You must unpack it first.

Smaller file sizes mean quicker download times, especially on restricted bandwidths.
