The story kicks off when an American attack submarine, the USS Tampa Bay , vanishes while shadowing a Russian Akula-class submarine in the Arctic. Rear Admiral John Fisk (played by Common) sends the USS Arkansas , a Virginia-class submarine commanded by the unconventional Commander Joe Glass (Gerard Butler), to investigate.
