The story follows (Lee Byung-hun), the impeccably dressed and fiercely loyal manager of a luxurious Seoul hotel and the trusted right-hand man to powerful underworld boss Mr. Kang. When Kang grows suspicious that his much younger mistress, Hee-soo (Shin Min-a), is being unfaithful, he orders Sun-woo to trail her and to "take care of the problem" if his suspicions are confirmed.

The cut enhances the film's brooding atmosphere. It allows scenes of introspection to breathe, emphasizing Sun-woo’s internal void, which contrasts sharply with the abrupt bursts of visceral violence.

The Director’s Cut of A Bittersweet Life is not a massive overhaul but rather a series of meticulous adjustments that better align with Kim Jee-woon’s artistic vision.

Upon catching Hee-soo with another man, Sun-woo experiences a fleeting, uncharacteristic moment of emotional awakening. Instead of killing them, he lets them go and covers it up.

: Small additions, such as showing a revolver with one of Sun-woo’s employees earlier in the film, provide better setup for later events.
