The 2011 film Osthi is a Tamil-language action comedy film directed by the renowned filmmaker S. Dharani, who is well-known for directing hit films like Ghilli and Dhool . The film is primarily known as a remake of the 2010 Bollywood blockbuster Dabangg , which starred Salman Khan. A project of this scale, remaking a film as beloved as Dabangg , was inevitably going to draw significant attention and comparisons from the very beginning.

In Osthi , Silambarasan stepped into the shoes of Osthi Velan, a fearless, eccentric, and somewhat corrupt police officer stationed in Thirunelveli.
