This shift resulted in a generational gap where many modern Malay speakers possess high fluency in spoken Malay but limited literacy in the Jawi script. Consequently, Al-Quran Rumi —editions of the Quran that feature Arabic text alongside its phonetic transliteration and translation in Romanized Malay—has emerged as a popular educational tool. This paper aims to analyze the role of Al-Quran Rumi in contemporary religious practice, weighing its benefits as an accessibility tool against the potential risks of ritual invalidity and linguistic erosion.
