When his family decides to sell the animals and move to Canada, they board a Japanese freighter called the Tsimtsum . During a violent storm, the ship sinks, and Pi, the sole human survivor, finds himself adrift on a small lifeboat. His initial companions, however, are far from friendly: a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and eventually, the Bengal tiger, Richard Parker.
